In 1906 the enterprise which was to become The Bentley Piano Co. Ltd. was founded in London by Douglas Grover, the third generation of Grover pianomakers. In 1911, observing a number of empty cloth mills in the Cotswolds, he moved his fledgling business to a mill near Stroud. In 1930 Douglas and his son launched an overstrung design to be sold under the new Bentley name. An immediate success, in the thirties the company became a major producer with an annual output exceeding 3,000 pianos.

Following the Second World War markets were developed world- wide and in the 1960s the number of pianos sold to the European continent grew dramatically. Over 65,000 Bentleys are played in a hundred countries.

In the early 1960s, the founder's grandson joined the business and during the next 20 years new designs were introduced, the foundation of the present well-proven Bentley range which offers soundly-constructed instruments with decades of reliable performing life. Suitable for both professional and amateur musicians, Bentley pianos represent the best of traditional European craftsmanship.

During the 1980s a number of well-known brands were acquired, and in 1993 production returned to London where The Bentley Piano Co. Ltd. now makes its refined pianos in the factory of its parent company, Whelpdale Maxwell & Codd Ltd.
