Packaging Musical Instruments

Mike's Music has negotiated with Business Post to provide our customers with a high quality collection and delivery service. The instruments are fully insured by us against loss and damage. However correctly packing your precious instrument will prevent many problems.

To pack the instrument you will need some packaging materials such as:

paper from an office shredder,

polystyrene packing material,

newspaper scrunched up into quite tight firm balls.

Please maker sure that your name, address, and any reference number we have given you is on a piece of paper in the instrument case or stuck to the instrument, and also clearly marked on the outside of the packaging.

Put the instrument in its hard case and check to make sure it is not rattling around, also check for loose objects such as mouthpieces. It would help us if you could remove all personal items, and things such as oils, greases, strings. For wood wind instruments please include your mouthpiece, as we will need to fit it to the tenon cork as part of a service or overhaul.

If the instrument is moving a lot in the case (maybe its old or not the proper case) then put some of your packing material around the instrument in its case. Close the lid making sure no undue pressure is applied.

Find a cardboard box that is slightly larger than the case of the instrument you are sending and suspend the case in the middle of the box. Seal the box with sticky tape and tie some string around the box for extra safety.

If you do not have a box you can pack the instrument case in a heavy-duty bin bag / rubble sack. The case must be strong and in good condition. We recommend tying the case with string as an extra precaution.

If you do not have a hard case for the instrument it can still be sent but you will need two boxes, one the size of the instrument the second larger. Put the instrument in the first box with packing material all around it. Then suspend the smaller box in the middle of the larger box using packing material, seal and tie the box as above.

If you need help or ideas for sending your instrument to us please give us a ring. For larger instruments we can sometimes for a small charge deliver all the packaging to you.

Please ensure that the instrument is properly packed before our agent calls to collect it, as they cannot wait.
